The preseason poll is out:

2007 Big 12 CONFERENCE Softball Preseason Coaches Poll

Team (first-place votes) Points

1. Texas A&M (8) 80
2. Baylor (1) 69
3. Nebraska 62
4. Oklahoma (1) 58
5. Texas 53
6. Kansas 39
7. Oklahoma State 28
8. Missouri 27
9. Texas Tech 23
10. Iowa State 11

According to the coaches, it looks like a league split in half - the top 5, and then the bottom 4, with Kansas kind of in the middle. While there is some definite seperation between the top 5 teams in this poll, the NFCA Top 25 poll shows that those top 5 may be interchangeable. Their poll includes a pretty serious Big 12 logjam in the middle of the poll:

13 Texas A&M
15 Nebraska
16 Oklahoma
17 Texas
18 Baylor

* A&M returns a ton of great players, both on offense and pitching, but they returned most of those same players last year and had a mildly disappointing season, including an early upset dismissal in the NCAA's. Some Aggies felt that they lost some senior leadeership before last year that really affected them, and that they won't have that issue this year

* Nebraska returns a grat pitcher in Ashley DeBuhr, but lost a good bit of offensive production. They'll have to replace that to have a chance to win the league.

* Oklahoma on the other hand returns almost everyone, although their one loss is a big one. The key could be if Mathis can repeat her freshman performance in the circle, and how much other pitching help develops.

* Somebody let the Cat out, so Texas is a little up in the air. Last time they had to go without her, they were a big disappointment, but they should have more ammunition now to avoid that than they did back when. Their offense improved last year, and they have another really good pitcher in Meagan Denny. I think her mental adjustment to being the post-Cat ace could be the key to the Horns' season.

*Kansas lost the best Big12 pitcher not named Osterman, but returns a good one in Kassie Humphreys. Their offense looks like a mix of some good returning players as well as some untested players who'll have to play early.

* Now for the team I know best - Baylor. We lost 3 really good offensive players that will be tough to replace, but return alot also. Pitching will be anchored by seniors Lisa Ferguson and Ashley Monceauex. Lisa spent last season recovering from arm surgery, and was not at her best, but should be 100% this year. Ashley signed with Arizona originally as a pitcher, but had spent the last few years out of the circle until last year, so it was a learning curve for her. She looked great in fall ball, so I'm expecting big things from her this year. Add sophomore Brittany Turner and Gatorade National High-School Player of the Year Kirsten Shortridge, and pitching depth should be a real strength. .

The offense will still have a good deal of power, though not quite as much, but will add more speed. The offense will be anchored by All-American Chelsi Lake at catcher and Brette Reagan at third. Brette was a 2nd-team All-American as well last year as a freshman. Monceaux returns at first. The middle infield is a question, with a probable freshman starter at shortstop, and a couple of potential options at second. The outfield will be a little young as well, with Shortridge and freshman twins Nicole and Tiffany Wesley potentially getting regular starting nods.

Thanks for the update...I'm looking forward to softball season again. I hope to get out to some of the UNM games this season...but they're usually at weird times during the week.

I'm hearing great things about the Aggies this season.

Of course you know who I'm following...the defending National Champions! But I'm still interested in the Big 12.

Does anyone know what is going on with :TAMU: 's Amanda Scarborough? Looking at their roster for last season, they don't have any sort of info on her sophomore year.

Everything's fine with her I believe. She did have a subpar sophomore year, at least as compared to her amazing freshman year. How much of that was the fairly common sophomore slump, or how much was the lingering effects of her injury is still up for debate I guess. The Aggie folks seem to feel she's 100% ready to go.

I never realized Kansas State doesn't have a softball team. I wished they did along with Colorado for both men's and women's. I was sad to see Iowa State disband their baseball team a few years ago. With Colorado, I know weather plays apart in it, but look at Michigan, or is it financial?

We don't expect to lose a game this year.
We do have equestrian and rowing. ;)
Besides that our rodeo team will rope your heals if you give us a hard time. :p

OK, seriously I do wish we had a softball team too. Clay Center is a hotbed of softball and has held well attended regional tourneys for years. Maybe someday "New Clay Center" will catch up. :ksu:

Where exactly does one row in Manhattan?

Does KSU have swimming? OU does not.

Tuttle Creek Lake just north of Manhattan. It is a fairly large lake behind Tuttle Creek dam. They brought a new rowing shell on to the floor at Bramlege last year. Those things can be long. It stretched from mid court to under the basket.

Does KSU have swimming? OU does not.
Not to my knowledge.

Uhhh, the Kansas River.....Duh!

It's actually quite beautiful with all the hills in that particular area of the state. It was pretty cold and not a leaf on the trees, but I could still imagine what it looked like during the spring and summer.

And BTW, I have no clue where they crew at in Manhattan. Just had to try and make swok smile more than she already does.:)

edit: Ahhhh! I was lucky and got it right. LOL I didn't realize it at the time, but the image I pulled above was from the Kansas City Rowing Club.

A few teams, including K-State, use to spend their spring breaks here in Waco training, mainly due to weather issues of course, but also because of the Brazos river next to campus, which is long and straight and they considered it a great river to row on.

That's why it was a shock a few years back when the administration chose to add equestrian instead of rowing. Heck, the club rowing team already has a privately funded boat storage facility and dock built on the river at the far edge of the Ferrell Center parking lot. As you might have figured, there was alot of political stuff going on.

There's alot of pretty big schools that don't offer softball, including Duke, Clemson, Vandy, USC, Washington State, and Miami. Obviously looking at those schools weather's not the issue, especially when every Big 10 school and almost every big East team fields a team. USC is smack dab in the hottest recruiting area in the country, where tons of California kids leave the state each year 'cause there's not enough D1 programs in the state to handle all the talent. And neither TCU or SMU have a team, leaving UTA and to some extent UNT as the only D1 schools in the huge DFW talent pool.

WIth Title IX it seems weird to see major schools not offering one of the most popular female sports, and there are varying reasons I suppose. But when you look at it, softball is a pretty unfriendly sport when it comes to Title IX compliance. It only offers a roster of around 20 at most, compared to 70-80 for equestrian, and pretty large numbers for crew. It also requires its' own specific and fairly expensive facilities, unlike say volleyball who can share a gym with basketball, or rowing, which as we've said, just needs a river and some canoes :) And it obviously doesn't make any money.

Overall it's a shame, 'cause there's some D1 quality athletes who might not get the opportunity they otherwise would. On the other hand, those Big 12 schools that do offer softball probably benefit from the situation, especially as it deals with recruiting in the underrepresented major areas such as Houston or Dallas.

I'm really excited for the softball season to start--the Huskers look to return a lot of talent this year!

I always mean to go so some softball games , but rarely do. A large number of the games take place in the afternoon when I'm working.

Not Big 12...but

There's something going on with Arizona's freshman ace Amanda Williams and her eligibility. She played in the fall games...but now her eligibilty for "personal reasons" is in question. They were supposed to know a week or so ago and they are still waiting.

http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/wildcats/166082

None the less...the Cats are ranked #1. It will be interesting to see what happens if Williams can't play. There's only one other pitcher on the roster besides Mowat and that's freshman Akamine.

The Cats take on the Aggies on Feb 11 in Tempe and then have 3 games at home. I also see Texas Tech, Mizzou, Baylor and OU on the schedule. Unfortunately, the 3 games with New Mexico are in Tucson.

Haha........tx.

carolann: I typically only watch softball after basketball is comletely over. Generally I'll watch a basketball game on TV over sitting in the stands to watch a softball game. And it's pretty cool come February and March as well.
So, I don't really get started until they start playing conference games. I had season tickets for a couple of years, but I wasn't using more than half of them, so I dropped them. I'm just as happy sitting out in center field as I am sitting behind home plate.

Living in here in Oklahoma and having both the softball tournament and the World Series so close is pretty cool.

There'll be fewer games in your backyard this year, as the Big 12 has changed their tournament from double elimination to single elimination. No official word as to why, but suggestions range from money, to finals, to trying to give teams heading to the NCAA's a little more rest and less opportunity to lose their momentum by losing two straight games.

I'm sorry to see this happen. I've never seen a baseball/softball tournament that didn't offer an opportunity to come out of a loser's bracket.:(
