Welcome to Hoopla! Because of the growing interest by those that frequent the message boards here at HoopScoop, a contest has been set up to challenge everyone's knowledge of matchups between players within the Big 12.

The following is a rundown of how the game will be played. We are just getting the game off the ground, so I, the website administrator, retain the power to modify the game according to suggestions from those that play the game as we progress through the season.

Twice a week, each player of Hoopla! (from now on designated as a team coordinator or "TC" for short) will need to pick a team of 10 players. Each TC will pick one pure guard and one pure forward. By pure, it is meant that according to the roster, the player should be listed as a guard only or a forward only and not as a guard/forward. Each TC also has to pick a post who can either be a pure post or a forward/post. The last two team members of a TC's starting lineup will be one additional guard and one additional forward. However, these two players can have the guard/forward designation as their position on the roster.

To summarize, a starting team will consist of one pure guard, one pure forward, one guard (or guard/forward) combo, one forward (or guard/forward combo), and one post (or forward/post combo). In order to account for any unforseen injuries (or other things such as disciplinary actions against a player), each TC must select a reserve player for each of the 5 starters. In the case that a player has to leave the game because of an injury, and does not return to action, then the player (either the injured player or the designated reserve) with the higher Hoopla! point total for the game will be used.

Each TC's team is awarded points (known as Hoopla! points) based on how each player performs in their game. Points will be totalled as follows:

Hoopla! Points = Total points scored + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks - turnovers - (fga-fgm) - (fta-ftm)

fga = field goals attempted
fgm = field goals made
fta = free throws attempted
ftm = free throws made

A tally of Hoopla! points will be kept throughout the season with the highest total at the end of the season designated as the winning team.

We will not use a draft at this time. To start, for now, we will simply allow each TC to pick any starting lineup of 5 players (and reserves for each of the starting players). If two TC's pick the same starting lineup - so be it. However, I kind of doubt that two TC's will pick the same starting lineup for the remaining 14 games.

We will be picking teams twice a week: once for the Tuesday/Wednesday games and once for the Saturday/Sunday games. Picks will be due by noon of the day of the first game. So if there are games Tuesday night, picks are due by noon Tuesday. If they don't start till Wednesday, then they are due noon Wednesday. Picks are always due by noon Saturday for the weekend games. As far as I know, there are no games starting before noon on Saturdays.

Okay, that is it for the first attempt at identifying rules for this game. If you have questions or commments fire away. Lets hash out all the questions that might arise.

One thing you never explicitly mentioned: do we post our picks on this message board, or email them to you or something?

For now, just post to this message board. I will set up a page for people to enter their choices in time for this weekend's games. For now - just use the roster that has been established in Interactive Stats. As we go along - we will need to decide if any roster changes are needed like designating a pure guard as a guard/forward instead or something like that.
