Wow, looks like ISU squeaked by in a night with several upsets:
Loyola Marymount over #25 Arizona St by 7, Miss State over #24 Maryland by 10, and #22 Colorado STate over #15 Notre Dame 72-66.
Williams finished 15-29, including 8-16 on three's! Wow!
Now ISU will play Miss State. It'll be a great match up between Welle and LaToya Thomas, who had 29 pts and 15 boards tonight.

I was at the Iowa State-DePaul game, and Williams was awsome. She hit some of her shots with players right on her. She is an excellent 3-point shooter, and can also shoot off the dribble. There were also times that our defenders just didn't locate her and that was disappointing. Coach Fennelly took the blame for not devising a better plan to stop her, and said he was clearly outcoached.
It would have been nice to win by more, but I think a highly competitive game will be better for the long term than a 30-point blowout over a weak opponent.
Losing Erica Junod to a knee injury really affects the guard court. She would have been the two guard and also would have played some at the point. Melanie Bremer had some good minutes last night, but thought the other new players just looked too tenative out there. They are going to be good players with more experience, but would be very surprised if we go undefeated during the non-conference schedule.

Yeah, the game was extremely close. This definitely was not the same DePaul team we pounded last year in Cedar Rapids. They looked really sharp all nite.
Junod will sorely be missed this year for her defense if nothing else. She and Taylor were the ones who were chasing the other team's top player around the court when we were on defense. June was a great shadow and held a lot of people in check. Hope Fennelly can find someone else to do that before too long.
Continue to be disappointed that Coach F doesn't get Ada Anderson more playing time/experience at the point or playing time period. He has said he's not happy with the way she is able to change hands while dribbling yet (among other things that need some work). But the only way she can get better is to be out on the floor. We'll have to see. Granted last nite wouldn't have been the best time for that since DePaul was using full-court man to man pressure on defense. Don't think Ada would be quite ready to deal with that kind of game yet, but she needs the opportunities.
As for the Mississippi State/Maryland game, if someone had a negative opinion on women's hoops, this game would have reinforced it completely. It was single handedly the WORST game I've ever seen in my life. Neither team came to life until MSU went on their final run to erase an 11 point deficit and win the game. The dribbling was bad and passing was worse. It was turnover after airball after turnover. Neither team looked like they'd seen a basketball before for the first 35 minutes of the game. Be VERY glad the MSU/UM game wasn't televised. It would have been two wasted hours of your life you'd never have gotten back. The really odd thing about it was it should have been a GREAT game! These are two teams with a lot of talent, but they sure didn't show it last nite.

DePaul basically had a couple of guards that threw up threes whenever they had teh slightest opening, and they had Williams, who took advantage of holes in the ISU zone but managed to make incredible shots even whenthe holes weren't there. It seemed to me that the ISU newcomers are not yet experts on running the zone, but by the last 10 minutes or so ISU's defense started to work.
What did Bill say to Tracy Gahan at the half? ISU struggled offensively in the first half, and Gahan did absolutely nothing. She had 0 points at half but I think she had 10 before the first media timeout of the second. She finished with 18, and she played as aggressively in the half as I've seen her since the Iowa game last season.
Re: MSU-Maryland My dad literally said the same thing: he hoped there were no WBB non-fans at the game, because they would never go to another game ever again. We had a bit of a contest guessing if either team would hit 60 points. MSU had about 39 with 10 minutes left. There was a lot of running up and down the court, but very little actual scoring.

Game is televised, today at 3 pm central.......on ESPN.
Mississippi State has a player that's a lot of fun to watch as well as being able to see Iowa State on TV.
