View Full Version : Addressing RSS Feed clutter

The RSS feeds truly are cluttering up the board for me...don't want to moan and complain but it's hard to find the "real" threads sometimes.

I do sympathize with you ladyhorns1fan. I kind of agree with you. However, I do listen to what the majority have to say here on HoopScoop and so I have consolidated forums. But tx4OU is correct in that now, because RSS feeds are listed in the main forum with everything else, they get read much, much more often and many times discussions form around them. That, I can't ignore. It has increased discussion.

But, I think I have a solution to your problem. I've implemented a new hack that will allow you to ignore the RSS Feeds. That means, that they will not even be listed on your display of threads. They way to do that is as follows:

1) Click on "User CP" in the upper-left-hand portion of the screen
2) Underneath "Control Panel" - scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" section and click on "Buddy / Ignore Lists"
3) In the "Ignore List" section type in the name "RSS_Feed" and click on "Save List".

That's it. Now all posts and threads posted by RSS_Feed will not be listed for you. BUT, do realize that if you ignore all RSS_Feed posts, that means you will also not be able to see any discussions that take place by other HoopScoop members for that thread.

You could always go back to your User Control Panel ("User CP") and remove RSS_Feed from your ignore list and all RSS_Feeds will once again be displayed.

Hope that helps.

I was about to reply to that other thread when I found this one.

Sounds like putting RSS Feed on your ignore list is a great idea. (I had actually thought of that but hadn't tested it to see if it would work. And since you say you had to create a "hack," I guess it would not have worked before.)

When things are slow, it's sometimes nice to have the RSS Feeds to give me something to look at.

But on game days, when there are several hot threads we're all posting in, then suddenly you get an RSS Feed from each school on the page pushing what we were talking about down, maybe even to page two. For each game, you're likely to get a feed from each school involved, and maybe one from the Dallas Morning News, and maybe another from the Kansas City Star. That's four threads on one topic. Most of the time they all say the same thing. If you look them over, you see that, in most cases, they are slightly different edits of the same article written by the same person. DANG! And in many cases it's an article we've already read at our favorite school's website.

But if we can iggy them . . . then maybe, on a slow day, or when looking for something, we can go take them off of ignore to check stuff out. Then put them back on ignore again when they become obnoxiously intrusive again.

So thumbs up for the option to ignore. And even moreso if I can toggle it on and off without too much trouble. (I haven't actually tried this yet. I'm not sure of the mechanics of it on this particular bulletin board software. This looks like the same layout as www.talkbass.com and www.thegearpage.net but I haven't tried it there either. :oo)

I agree-- I don't have a problem with single RSS feeds, but when there are multiple feeds that are all having the same topic, it gets rather redundant and annoying.

I don't mind them at all. In fact, having topics pushed to two pages gets me excited that I get to read that much more from my fellow HoopScoopers. If it's an RSS Feed that I've read from the opponents release, then it's just a simple two click (one in and one out) to get back to the board and then that thread has been dehighlighted as read.

Perfect solution! Thanks so much, Commish!

FYI - I am not going to put them on ignore because I'v found a way to deal with what at first annoyed me. 1) if it is a school feed and there are no responses - I don't click. If it is important enough, I'll see the info elsewhere. 2) If it is DN or some other news outlet - I'll read it.

I won't put RSS feeds on ignore either because there are a few I would hate to miss, but if you look at the board right now the words "RSS feed clutter" sure do make a lot of sense. At least two identical feeds and a board full of others. I am apparently in the minority but I sure liked RSS feeds in a separate place much better than this mess.

All that being said I will now shut up and appreciate the fine place you have provided for us Commish. Any negitives are TOTALLY out weighed by the MANY positives of HoopSccop. Thanks again for your efforts.

What Jimi said, though I have put RSS on ignore for the moment just to see if I like it that way.

I'm in the minority with you as well.

This year has been incredibly busy at work and I feel like I barely have time to do the little bit of reading and posting that I have, trying to sift through the RSS feeds was only adding to that.........

so I put them on ignore for that reason.

I did what the Commish said over a week ago and I still see all those threads which I really am not interested in. So, now what?

Hmmm, not sure what to say. It worked when I tried it.

I've also implemented something else. The day of games I will suspend or ban RSS_Feed posts so you will not be able to see the feed. This should help with all the multiple, redundant posts on game recaps which we'll have anyway. I'll try it out this weekend and see if it keeps the clutter down. Then on Monday, the RSS_Feed will be enabled again.

Hope all goes well. I'm headed out of town for 1 1/2 weeks. I'll check in from time to time, albeit with only a 50K baud rate connection (:eek: dark ages!!).

I just don't want to go back to where the RSS Feeds are in a completely different forum. They will never get looked at, and wasn't that the original complaint to begin with?

If I'm the only one who clicks into them and reads the first paragraph blip and posts a reply to them if it's something I am interested in discussing, then I guess we should do what's best for everyone on the board. Like I said earlier on this subject, they number of them don't bother me at all, esp. if some of them have generated some discussion from others. More opportunities for discussion with my fellow intelligent B12 fans is what I look forward to the most when coming to HoopScoop multiple times a day.

I too have been distressed by the RSS clutter, and I was one of those who favored consolidation. I hadn't counted on how many more RSS threads there would be once conference play started. (At least, I have the impression there are now many more.)

I still like having them around because I do read them sometimes, but it certainly detracts from the ease of reading and using the board. Not quite sure what to recommend, but I'll try making selective use of "ignore" and see how that goes.

I do believe that there are three A&M RSS feeds about the 02/24 A&M defeat ("rout") of Texas. Surely one would be sufficient? :p
