Don't know if anyone has used the email notification utility within the calendar, but I just tested it and it works fine.
For Calendar events that have been entered as "ranged events" like the Big 12 Women's Coaches' Teleconferences, you can go to the event and then request an email reminder notification. That way you don't miss it!
